Course Overview and Target Audience:
This ASMBS course provides an overview of laparoscopic suturing skills and how they allow bariatric surgeons and Integrated Health personnel to advance to an expert level by adding the flexibility of intracorporeal suturing and knot tying. This advanced suturing workshop will provide hands-on training in a variety of intracorporeal suturing techniques with an emphasis on construction of a hand-sewn anastomosis. The course is designed for surgeons and support staff involved in the care of obese patients.

Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Perform advanced suturing techniques including tissue approximation, knot tying, and completion of a hand-sewn anastomosis
  • Describe the advantages and disadvantages of intra-corporeal suturing
  • Apply intracorporeal suturing techniques to manage common laparoscopic surgical problems

Maintenance of Certification:
For bariatric surgeons, surgeons new to the field of bariatric surgery, and primary clinicians, this event will provide CME in their specific specialty to comply with Maintenance of Certification (MOC) in the following areas: (1) Patient Care, (2) Medical Knowledge, (3) Systems-Based Practice, and (4) Practice-Based Learning and Improvement.
