Course Overview and Target Audience:
This course is designed to provide a foundation regarding the principles of motility with the gastric band, identification of the struggling patient and management strategies, enhancement of aftercare, fundamentals of gastric placation with LAGB and recognition of gastric band complications and the potential role for surgical revision.  This course is primarily designed for surgeons and integrated health personnel currently engaged, or thinking of engaging, in laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding, or for general surgeons seeking more knowledge of this area of bariatric surgery in order to manage complications or provide coverage for bariatric surgeons in their facility.

Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the motility physiology with the gastric band
  • Identify the struggling patient and understand management strategies
  • Explain the role aftercare to optimize patient outcomes
  • Restate the surgical technique fundamentals of gastric placation with LAGB and understand early outcomes
  • Identify gastric band complications and the potential role for surgical revision

Maintenance of Certification:
For bariatric surgeons or general surgeons providing coverage for bariatric surgeons, this event will provide CME in their specific specialty to comply with Maintenance of Certification (MOC) in the following areas:  (1) Patient Care, (2) Medical Knowledge, and (3) Practice-Based Learning and Improvement.
